Language and communication can be used to show one’s affection towards another person, yet it is still difficult to convey the true meaning of love. The short story â€Å"What We Talk About When We Talk About Love† by Raymond Carver signifies through sharing vastly different experiences, that language is inadequate in communicating a clear definition of love. Each of the four characters in the short story explain to the group their own meaning of love while striving to come to a coherent conclusion. The first experience brought upon to the conversation was Terri’s ex-husband Ed. Terri claimed that although Ed beat her up, he loved her and â€Å"loved her so much he tried to kill her† (Carver 651). Because of the car crash and their injuries, the old couple wa s both set in bandages head to toe. Resulting from this, the man became very depressed and his â€Å"heart was breaking because he couldn’t turn his goddamn head and see his goddamn wife† (Carver 660). The man had more serious issues than being able to see his wife as he himself was injured too. Even after the old man found out that his wife was going to be okay he was still very depressed all because he could not see the person whom he loved most. Different from the previous so-called definitions of love, Mel uses this experience to convey what he believes to be the true meaning of love and it leaves the group bewildered as they all have never experienced that kind of love. Despite each of their own different meanings of love, one thing the group has in common is that they all currently love the person they are married to, have been married to someone else before and probably loved other people before that too even. Mel agrees on the fact that he must have loved his e x-wife Marjorie too, just like Terri loved Ed, but has a hard time accounting for where that love went. In addition, she cages birds she intends to set free on her judgement day, however, she states, â€Å"I positively doubt sometimes whether while matters are still unsettled I may not one day be found lying stark and senseless here, as I have found so many birds!† (74). Like Miss Flite, the suit has stagnated Robert’s life. Robert, â€Å"So young and handsome, and in all respects so perfectly the opposite of Miss Fliteis so dreadfully like her† in his clouded, eager, and seeking mannerism (592). Under the misconception that the suit â€Å"can’t last forever† (599), Robert dec lares, â€Å"I am young and earnest; and energy and determination have done wonders many a time†¦I devote myself to the suit. I make it the object of my life† (599). As a result, this suit not only causes Robert to loose himself, but his misplaced suspicions cause him to loose his sound relationship with Mr. Jarndyce. â€Å"The one great principle of the English law is, to make business for itself†¦viewed by this light it becomes a coherent scheme† (621) of which lawyers are the key players. Mr. Vholes, Robert’s lawyer, â€Å"always looking at the client, as if he were making a lingering meal of him with his eyes as well as with his professional appetite,† (624) dupes Robert into believing that he needs him for his suit. This â€Å"respectable† lawyer tells Robert that because he is represented he will have a voice in the legal system, however, it means nothing for Robert’s suit. Thus, these false hopes told to Robert by his lawyer eventually results in his melancholy death. â€Å"Make man-eating unlawful, and you starve the Vholeses,† (623) however, Mr. Vholes is only one type of lawyer. Mr. Tulkinghorn, â€Å"reputed to have made good thrift out of aristocratic marriage settlements and aristocratic wills,† (23) leads to Lady Dedlock’s demise. Mr. Tulkinghorn wished to display his power over Lady Dedlock (a representative of the aristocratic class) thus, he blackmailed her. In Lady Dedlock’s own words, â€Å"I am to remain upon this gaudy platform, on which my miserable deception has been so long acted, and it is to fall beneath me when you give the signal† (659). Mr. Tulkinghorn’s desire to know the secrets of the aristocratic leads him to deceive, bribe, threaten, blackmail and eventually kill others. One unfortunate soul used by Mr. Tulkinghorn is Joe. He bribes Joe to confess about Lady Dedlock’s visit to him disguised as her maid. Later, he hires Inspector Bucket who says, â€Å"Don’t you be afraid of hurting the boy†¦it’s all right as far as the boy’s concerned†¦he’ll be paid for his trouble, and sent away again†¦it’s the best and wisest way to keep little matters like this quiet†(356). This inspector kidnaps Joe, bribes him, threatens him to stay away from London and leaves him to fend for himself. However, Joe falls ill and returns to London where he eventually dies. Thus, Dickens successfully portrays how Chancery diminishes people’s way of life, whether they are of a lower class like Joe and Ms. Flyte, or are of an upper class like Robert and Lady Dedlock. People’s ignorance is manifested by their lack of understanding that their mind is attached to these transient /impermanent materials. The reasons why people suffer is due to their clinging and craving. They fail to understand that their attachment to these things is transient. Therefore, it is inevitable that they must lose them in a bid to usher in suffering. In fact, in the six years of a wakening, Buddha exercised speculation and used time with leaders of the abstainers. During his stay, he was able to understand and master their systems, but was not convinced that he had found the answers that he was seeking on the source of human suffering.
